Read previewOver the past three decades, I've witnessed various approaches to performance-improvement plans (PIPs) as an HR executive across five different industries and three countries. Once the PIP process begins, this fracture in trust is seldom repaired. AdvertisementA better approach involves choiceFrom 1998 to 2004, I was an HR executive at Cisco Systems, where I encountered a novel approach to the traditional PIP process. Prior to my arrival, Cisco had recognized that something was broken in the PIP process. Looking at the data and listening to employees, the HR team developed a new approach that involved choice.

Spiders are weavers. The Navajo artist and weaver Melissa Cody knows this palpably. It also infuses “Melissa Cody: Webbed Skies,” the first major solo exhibition of the artist’s work, which is on view at MoMA PS1 through Sept. 9. in a co-production with the São Paulo Museum of Art in Brazil (known as MASP). The exhibition is part of the overdue recognition of Indigenous artists by museums and other institutions, from the recent retrospective of Jaune Quick-to-See-Smith’s work at the Whitney Museum of American Art to the expanding roster of artists at the Venice Biennale. Cody, 41, is a millennial at the forefront of an art form harking back millenniums — at once building on tradition and joyously venturing beyond it.

Bridget Jones may be neurotic, absurd and mired in patriarchy, but she’s a hell of a lot more fun than any black coffee-glugging, Marx-bothering Sally Rooney heroine. The third film, 2016’s “Bridget Jones’s Baby” (which followed the 2004 sequel, “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason”) was enjoyable enough, but it left me feeling as though I’d filled my plate one too many times at a delicious but overstuffed buffet. (It is also a truth universally acknowledged that a piece of writing mentioning Bridget Jones or any Jane Austen adaptation must contain the phrase “it is a truth universally acknowledged,” so that’s out of the way). Bridget Jones changed that. The most disappointing thing about Bridget Jones was always the reaction to her, especially Renée Zellweger’s portrayal.

How damaging are all the renewed questions about age and mental acuity going to be? One Democratic member of the House responded to being told of the questions about age and memory raised in the report with a morbid laugh and sullen shake of the head. Inside the White House and among Biden’s reelection campaign staff, the tension is constant. Biden aides also feel themselves that this hasn’t been enough. Most importantly, they reflect what Biden aides have learned from experience: Nothing combats questions about the president’s competence as much as people seeing him in action.

True to form, Swift ensured this year's Grammy discourse would be dominated by her music, even if she didn't win a major award. Alas, the evening ended with Swift notching her record-breaking fourth win for album of the year. I was even more disappointed to watch Swift win over SZA, whose sophomore album, "SOS," earned universal acclaim. Despite being the most awarded person in Grammy history, Beyoncé has won only once in a general-field category (song of the year for "Single Ladies" in 2010). Only 11 Black artists have ever won album of the year.

Or how young they were at the time — they met as early-20-somethings, basically kids! Or, by the standards of celebrity romances, how un-stage-managed the courtship was, how palpably obsessed with her he was, certainly to the detriment of his relationship with his coaches. With, yes, the cushioning of extreme wealth — but in spite of all the forces that unravel other A-list couples, the media maelstroms and the unique temptations of celebrity. The romance of Taylor and Travis, at a time of political polarization and growing ideological alienation between the sexes, has inspired a lot of entertaining, kidding-not-kidding takes about how a Swift-Kelce marriage or a Swift-Kelce baby might revolutionize our culture. But watching “Beckham” made me wonder if a more ideal celebrity model for champions of romance and fecundity has actually been with us all along.

Inside the Shed’s Sonic Sphere

The xx remix did nicely separate the bass, coming up palpably but not too heavily out of the bottom of the sphere, from the voices around and above. For all the souped-up spiffiness of the Sonic Sphere, the programming on Saturday felt like a retread of artists who were more interesting when Alex Poots, the Shed’s artistic director, presented them during his stint at the Park Avenue Armory uptown. Levit, the following year, played Bach as part of an ornate concentration exercise orchestrated by Marina Abramovic. Both of them on Saturday were under 40 minutes, but I found myself getting antsy well before time was up. Perhaps the audiences at Burning Man, the techno-hippie hedonist bonanza in the Nevada desert where a Sonic Sphere was built last year, were more engrossed, experiencing it on harder drugs than the Coke Zero I’d had with dinner.

The Majesty of the Cure’s Live Show

Thursday night, I got the sense that this was not something Smith was just doing for show: This is a band that noticeably, palpably cares about its fans. And onstage, Smith emitted a sincere sense of gratitude that I found transfixing. Yes, Smith still styles himself like a kinder, gentler version of the Joker. Here were six guys just playing their instruments, occasionally striking exaggerated rock poses, but mostly just letting this majestic music speak for itself. Today’s playlist is an appreciation for the Cure’s reign as a top-notch live act.

China’s readout of the call was noticeably more pointed, underscoring the deep distrust that lingers between Beijing and Washington. Qin told Blinken the US should “show respect” on China’s core concerns such as the Taiwan issue. Blinken originally planned to visit China in February as the two countries attempted to stabilize ties following an in-person meeting between their leaders in Indonesia last November. But the high-stakes trip was postponed over a suspected Chinese spy balloon that flew over the continental US and was later shot down. In a veiled criticism, Qin appeared to blame the US for the heightened tensions in recent months in his call with Blinken, according to the Chinese readout.

Opinion: We want a choice instead of Charles

CNN —When King Charles rumbles up the road from Buckingham Palace in his horse drawn carriage on May 6, off to his coronation, I will be nearby, protesting for the abolition of the British monarchy. According to a recent Savanta poll, support for abolition – that is, Britain having an elected head of state – is close to a third. Protesters hold signs reading "Not My King" behind well wishers gathered for the arrival of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla at the Liverpool Central Library on April 26, 2023. So, when we shout “Not My King!” at Charles, it is a proud statement of democratic principle – that we recognise no person’s claim to be above us because of birth. On May 6 it’s about saying very clearly, we want an election instead of a coronation, and a choice instead of Charles.
Opinion | We Were Wrong About President Biden

On this airborne ego trip, he had a bed, and I don’t mean a seat that flattened into one. He had an office, with a desk bigger than those of some earthbound executives. President.” He’d upgraded from his old surname, as illustrious as it was, to a kind of divinity. I never flew with President Barack Obama. But I visited him in the White House several times.
(On top of that, NYC residents owe a city income tax, which may also apply to some nonresidents.) There is no income tax in New Hampshire or Washington, either, but both states tax investment earnings. But you still must pay taxes by the original deadline to avoid penalties and interest. If you made a net profit of $400 or more from your side hustle, you have to pay taxes on it, according to the IRS. The U.S. has a pay-as-you-go system, so you'll need to pay taxes from your side hustle on a quarterly basis.
UNITED NATIONS, Dec 9 (Reuters) - Russia is attempting to obtain more weapons from Iran, including hundreds of ballistic missiles, and offering Tehran an unprecedented level of military and technical support in return, Britain's U.N. "Russia is now attempting to obtain more weapons, including hundreds of ballistic missiles," Woodward told reporters. We're concerned that Russia intends to provide Iran with more advanced military components, which will allow Iran to strengthen their weapons capability," she said. Iran has promised to provide Russia with surface-to-surface missiles, in addition to more drones, two senior Iranian officials and two Iranian diplomats told Reuters in October. The United States said on Wednesday that it has seen the continued provision of Iranian drones to Russia, but that Washington had not seen evidence that Iran has transferred ballistic missiles to Russia for use against Ukraine.
